Finland has a well-integrated transportation system. The railroad connects with the Swedish and Russian networks. There are also frequent air services to most neighboring states. Presently, links with the Baltic countries are being improved. Internal air travel is also important, particularly north of the Arctic Circle.
With over 60,000 lakes and rivers, Finland has Europe's largest inland waterway system. Although it still carries freight, its use today is mainly recreational. Finland's international ports handle around 60 million tons a year. Kotka is the chief port for exports. Helsinki, with its five specialized harbors, handles most imports.
